Do you need a Night Guard?
If you find yourself regularly waking up with dull headaches, neck and shoulder pains or stiff jaws, the chances are that you may be grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep and could benefit from wearing a night guard. Similarly, you may spot damage to your teeth or even breakage of them. Many people who wear night guards also find that it can quickly rectify disturbed sleep patterns caused by the teeth grinding.

How will a Night Guard help?
It’s likely that your dentist will recommend having a custom made night guard fitted. This usually involves taking moulds of your teeth (using a soft putty) which may be a little uncomfortable but not painful. From this, the dentist will be able to make a fitted night guard specific to your teeth which will prevent contact with opposing teeth.
By relieving the pressure on the teeth from grinding or clenching, damage will be limited or avoided altogether and the muscular discomfort in the jaw, neck and head should also subside.
Wearing your Night Guard
Although your night guard will be specifically moulded to your teeth and gums, it can take a little while to get used to wearing it. After a few nights, you should find it more comfortable however and it’s just a matter of time before you’ll be able to sleep soundly with it every night.
